About Them: Sam Uley is the leader of the La Push werewolf pack. His father was, Joshua Uley who abandoned him and his mother when Sam was just a child. Before his transformation into a werewolf Sam was romantically involved with Leah Clearwater, who had been his high school sweetheart. After his transformation their relationship began to unravel as he was forbidden to tell Leah what he had become. Their relationship came to an abrupt halt when Sam imprinted on Leah's second cousin, Emily Young, and began to go back on every promise he had ever made to Leah. Jacob Black during the saga says that Sam feels guilty for betraying Leah feels responsible for the bitter person Leah later becomes. As a wolf Sam is pure black and the largest wolf since he phased/transformed first before the rest of the pack. In Breaking Dawn we are told that Jacob has grown taller than Sam showing. While Sam acts as the packs Alpha that is not his role by blood-this is why Jacob eventually grows larger than Sam as he is the leader of the pack by blood. Jacob shys from that responsibility until Breaking Dawn. In Breaking Dawn Sam becomes annoyed with the Cullen family and quickly judging plans to attack the Cullens on their territory when he believes that the Cullens have changed Bella Swan into a vampire going back on their ancient promise. This is what prompts Jacob to step up to his job as Alpha.
Their Early History: Due to being human there is not much of a past for Sam Uley. He only as the future ahead of him.

Correction, it was the "abomination" of Bella being pregnant with a vampire's child that was prompting Sam to lead his pack to attack the Cullens. They knew Bella had not been turned yet. Sam wanted to attack because Reneesme was in the womb of Bella. THAT is what led Jacob to assume his alpha role.
